How the comparison works
Petrol cost a month = km ÷ mileage × petrol price. EV cost a month = km ÷ km per unit × your charging rate, mixing home and public charging in the share you choose.
Payback = the extra price of the EV ÷ what you save each month on fuel and maintenance. Insurance and resale value are left out; EVs often cost a little more to insure.
CO₂ for the EV uses India's average grid factor of 0.71 kg per unit. Charging from rooftop solar is close to zero.
Frequently asked questions
Is an EV worth it if I drive little?
The less you drive, the longer the payback. Below about 500 km a month for a car, the higher price can take many years to recover.
How long do EV batteries last?
Most makers warrant the battery for 8 years or 1.6 lakh km in cars, and 3–5 years for scooters.
